Storage Facility Upgrades to Wireless IP

Introduction

The mangers at C & M Mini Storage in Ukiah, California wanted to prevent the next break-in by upgrading their analog surveillance system. Thieves stole valuables out of the storage units and the current older analog system didn’t deliver high quality images to identify the thieves. Managers demanded a reliable system of high-caliber that offered impeccable images, live view, and most importantly act as a deterrent before the next break-in. After experiencing analog, they decided along with their security professional to upgrade their system to IP.

Challenge

Originally, C & M Mini Storage was 250 units, but recently they added another 500 new storage units to the property. Since it was a large area to cover, the main challenge for the security professional was connecting a surveillance system as Cat5E cable couldn’t entirely be deployed from the far end of the lot to the main office building. He thought it was best to do a mix of cabling the nearest cameras and finding a wireless solution to secure coverage from the various locations throughout the premises.

Solution

With the help of a trusted LTS product consultant, the security professional thought it was best to deploy cable to connect half of the project and go wireless the other half to fully surveil the property. Six Platinum Fixed Lens Bullet Cameras, CMIP9142W, were installed along the back wall of the property to secure units. An 8-port 100Mbps Unmanaged PoE Switch, POE-SW801, was used to power the cameras and help transmit surveillance data to a 5GHz Nanostation M5, LTUBNSM5, and send the video wirelessly to the front office where an Ubiquiti Rocket M5, LTUBAMO-5G10, receiver was connected to a Platinum Professional Level 16 Channel NVR, 1U, LTN8716-P16, to record the forensic evidence on one Western Digital 6TB Purple Surveillance Hard Drive, DHWD60PURX. Cable was used to connect the remaining CMIP9142W, but also one Platinum Fixed Bullet Camera 4.1MP -6mm, CMIP9142W-6, cameras on the units to secure each isle of units. Two Platinum Discreet Pinhole IP Cameras 1.3MP, CMIP183, were installed and positioned to capture who is the waiting area and behind the counter of the front desk for full surveillance and keep staff safe. A large monitor maintained the live view of all the cameras, making it easier for the management team to secure the property and deter the next act of theft from occurring.

Result

Both the security professional and management at C & M Mini Storage were very impressed with the results as the system used both cable and wireless solutions to surveil the entire property without any problems. Utilizing wireless solutions for part the project kept costs down. Storage management feels more confident in its surveillance system now that upgrade from an analog system to a high-resolution IP network system.

Powerful Bandwidth Needed for Large Solution at Major Health Club Chain

Introduction

LA Fitness is known all over the United States as one of the premier health clubs. It started in 1984 in Southern California and opened sports clubs across the country offering members free weights, cardio machines, group aerobics, basketball, and swimming as each club has a large size pool. Today, there are more than 171 clubs across the country. Since the clubs are growing in popularity, managers for 12 clubs in the North New Jersey area had a growing concern about the need to keep members, staff, and their personal belonging safe in the facility. They needed a system with powerful bandwidth for the large number of cameras.

Challenge

The installer was new to surveillance solutions. His background was in telecommunications, installing phone systems for corporations. He was confident about doing the job with the assistance of LTS technical support and specialists. However, his biggest concern was with bandwidth because the number of cameras involved. Bandwidth is the amount of bits transmitted in a second (bitrate). Bitrate is the measurement of the size of a video stream, depending on the resolution and frame rate of the video, compression codecs, and how much motion there is in the video. Bitrate decides the storage and bandwidth requirements. If the bitrate is not enough, the end-user will have poor video quality. If the bitrate is too much, it will waste bandwidth and storage. The installer had to make sure the system had the perfect bitrate for the project. He nicknamed the NVRs “Beast” for the power to control the number of cameras without sacrificing the video resolution.

Solution

The installer pre-planned for all 12 locations. Since managers wanted the employee breakroom, nutrition bar, small retail shop, reception and sales areas monitored, the installer placed three Platinum Varifocal Vandal Dome Network IP Cameras 4.1MP, CMIP7243W-S, in each of those locations with the exception of sales. Two cameras were installed in that department. In the employee breakroom, the cameras were mounted along the wall of the room to maximize the surveillance area and monitor employees. One camera was focused on the doorway to capture who walks in and out, another focused on the middle of the room where the refrigerator is, and the third on the other end of the room where the TV is. The nutrition bar also had full situation awareness with a set of three CMIP7243W-S cameras. One camera was over the actual bar to observe the register to prevent sweethearting and make sure members do not steal. A second camera was installed for added safety to the small sitting area for gym members, and the third camera monitored the back area where nutritional products are stored for the bar. The retail shop is tied to the nutrition bar. The shop offers gym members fitness apparel and accessories. Three cameras were also used to monitor the racks of clothes in the shop and also the register to deter any theft. A third camera was left on a full view of the shop for full coverage. The sales area has two CMIP7243W-S, there is one in the back and one up front where crisp details of members and visitors are captured when they walk in the area to meet with sales reps. That area is attached to reception, and has three CIMP7243W-S. There is one mounted overhead the main reception desk from the ceiling to capture all forensic evidence of transactions between members and staff. One camera was mounted to a cement pillar in the back of the desk area to capture the entire scene. A third camera mounted to the front wall above the doors to capture a different view of the entire front desk area for full situational awareness. These cameras were plugged into the Platinum Enterprise Level 32 Channel 4K NVR 1.5U, LTN8932-P16. The installer called it “Beast” because it supports live view, playback up to 12MP IP Camera, Quad-core CPU, and takes care of the installer’s bandwidth concern, as it offers 256MB bandwidth. It’s also capable of 4K (3840x2160) HDMI video output. Five Platinum Fixed Lens Dome Network IP Cameras 2.1MP, CMIP7422, captured all the basketball action on the court in high definition. One camera was pointed at the door to capture people walking in and out of the doorway and one was monitoring the left side of the court. For a different view, the installer mounted a second dome camera on the right side of the wall for better situational awareness. With the assistance of LA Fitness, he borrowed a small indoor scissor lift to mount three separate domes overhead and down the middle of the gym ceiling to monitor members as they played basketball. Since the five dome cameras are more than 100ft away from a power source and the NVR, they were plugged into a PoE 24 Port + 2 Port GE Switch, POE-SW2402A. Three Western Digital Purple Surveillance Hard Drive – 5TB, DHWD50PURX, were used to record the video information from the NVRs.

Result

Even though there was some concern about the bandwidth, the installer worked through it with the help of LTS technicians who set the bitrate. The bitrate was adjusted and the NVRs work great. LTS is great at resolving problems customers face, going the extra mile.

LTS Solutions Monitor Six Texas Malls to Keep Shoppers and Staff Safe

Introduction

One property management company in Dallas, Texas is combating crime and keeping the public safe by installing up to 60 cameras at six different outdoor retail centers. They expanded so fast, they outgrew their surveillance previous network. They needed a parallel network at each center. There’s a major hardware store, nursery, and an organic grocery store at some of the centers. The company wanted monitoring in every common area of the center. Management hired an installer that needed to carefully plan for a new surveillance system. They needed a high resolution utilitizing both HD-TVI and IP with built-in audio cameras.

Challenge

For a successful installation, the installer invested a lot of pre-planning into this project. The installer’s first priority was figuring out proper height, distances and lens specs at each location for the perfect surveillance coverage. Once the specific height and specs were determined, he established a cabling route for the cameras to connect to one main central security location for all six retail centers where there are NVRs and DVRs. High resolution of both HD-TVI and IP need to be installed within a strict timeline.

Solution

He installed 24 Platinum HD-TVI Turret Cameras 2.1MP, CMHT2122-28, sparsely throughout the retail centers, specifically attached to the wall by the parking lots and main walkways. CMHT2122-28 is equipped with Smart IR up to 65ft. Smart IR helps balance out images should an object be up close to the camera and overexposed by the sun or other type of lighting. He used 24 Male Pigtails connections to bring full power for this part of the system. The cameras were connected to two Platinum Advanced Level 16 Channel HD-TVI DVR 1U, LTD8316T-FT for full time recording. Two Western Digital Purple Surveillance Hard Drive-1TB, DHWD10PURX, stored video information from the cameras. Four Platinum Fisheye Network IP Camera 6MP – Indoor, CMIP7562F, were installed on the above coverings of common food areas at the retail centers. The Platinum Fisheye Network IP Camera 6MP and has multiple viewing capabilities such as Fisheye, Panoramic, Split 180-degrees and ePTZ streams with preset and patrol functions, used for full coverage and no gap surveillance coverage. It’s equipped with IR up to 33ft. To monitor the side walkways leading to the retail center’s back areas, the Platinum Fixed Lens Dome IP Camera 2.1MP – 2.8mm were installed along the wall and pointed in various angles for expanded situational awareness. These cameras are 3-axis and can be easily adjusted to deliver a straight image to its NVR. It’s also equipped with 30 IR LEDs up to 100ft. The IR enhances images in lowlight situations so details are clearer and more apparent for forensic evidence. Four Platinum Fixed Lens Dome Cameras 4.1MP – 2.8mm monitored the retail center’s main security center and offices. With its compact size, this camera is perfect for discrete monitoring. It’s equipped with True WDR 120dB, it’s also able to record audio with a built-in microphone. The retail center managers expressed they needed smart technology to help protect shops, so they wanted a camera that was high definition and offered VCA. The installer chose the Platinum Mini Bullet IP Camera 2.1MP. It’s capable of line crossing, intrusion detection and has motion detection. An alarm, alert or email is triggered when the camera senses an intrusion, crossing or motion. This will help protect the center and stores. With only 13 cameras available among six retail centers, these cameras dispersed amongst the major anchors of the retail center. Three were installed across Ruibal’s Plants of Texas to monitor the public. Another three were installed at another retail center in front of Calloway’s Nursery. Seven cameras went to monitor an organic grocery store since they’re open 24-hours day, and it added extra security. All these cameras were connected and routed to two NVRS. The Platinum Enterprise Level 64 Channel NVR 2U, LTN0764, records in real-time with a resolution of 1920X1080P, 16CH simultaneous playback. The second NVR, Platinum Enterprise Level 16 Channel NVR 1.5U, LTN8816, records with a resolution 3072x2048. Third-party network cameras are supported, up to 6MP resolution recording. The video information was recorded on two Western Digital Purple Surveillance Hard Drives, each 4TB.

Result

The property manager for the retail centers was grateful for such service and highest quality LTS products embody. They have room to expand and are in fact still growing to add another 20 camreas total. Overall, the installer was happy about how smooth the project went and so was the property managers.

Hyatt House uses LTS solutions to keep guests safe

Introduction

The Hyatt Hotels Corporation is based out of Chicago with hotels and resorts all over the U.S. and other parts of the world. The first Hyatt hotel opened in 1969, the Hyatt Regency Hong Kong. By 1980, the brand was introduced to the US with a resort in Maui. Eventually, the chain expanded to include more than 600 hotels, resorts, and vacation properties. The Hyatt House in Frisco, Texas was under construction, and security was a high value.

Challenge

Management requested the multi-level hotel be monitored with a system that had a very high surveillance resolution and included audio on two specific cameras. However, one big challenge is the hotel’s infrastructure is open, so there is a lot of sunlight coming through the day which could affect how the images are recorded on camera. Also, they needed at least 45 days of motion recording, around the clock. The cameras were needed at the hotel’s front desk area and the control room to help monitor guests and staff.

Solution

Since there’s a lot of sunlight coming through the open infrastructure of the hotel, the installer believed it was best to use 14 Platinum Fixed Lens Dome Cameras 4.1MP – 2.8, CMIP7442W-28M. These cameras are equipped with True WDR 120dB to help with overexposure from the sun. The installer placed three cameras by the entrance in the lobby. Two cameras were mounted on the wall by the windows pointing in the direction of the front desk. Three went overhead of the front desk to watch staff and customer transactions. Another went in the front desk area, on the wall for a different angle. Five cameras were installed above in the waiting area by the front desk. These cameras are all 2.8mm so they would have a wider field of view. The camera’s housing has 3-axis adjustment capabilities in which they can be placed on the wall or from the ceiling, and it will give a straight picture because its mounting can be adjusted. These cameras are also equipped with a built-in microphone. Two Platinum Fixed Lens Dome Cameras 4.1MP–2.8mm, CMIP3142W-28S, were placed in the control room of the Hyatt House. One went overhead to get a wide shot of the control room. The other just over the entrance to capture anyone walking in or out of the room. To satisfy the required 45 days of motion recording, three 5TB Western Digital Purple Surveillance Hard Drives, DHWD50PURX. The Platinum Enterprise Level 32 Channel NVR 1.5U, LTN8832-P16, recorded all guests and employees at the front desk and control room.

Result

Hotel management was very satisfied with the quality of job and LTS products. They loved the fact the new system is user-friendly. The new construction made for a clean installation. Managers also liked the remote access for easier control of the system. They also still have plenty of room to expand the system.

Introduction

A Palo Alto family wanted to upgrade their outdated video surveillance system in their multimillion dollar home. But, the new video system needed to integrate with Control4, a home automation system already in place. Control4 simplified their lives as they could manage the living room temperature, ceiling lights, garage door, TV and radio, using touchscreen panels throughout the home. They could also manage and view secured areas of their home through LTS IP cameras since the cameras are compatible with Control4. Basic PTZ features are available on the Control4 box and mobile app from Android devices.

Challenge

Removing the outdated video surveillance system and rewiring a large area of the home created a major time crunch for the installer. But, the installer managed to work diligently and started installing the new cameras right away. Once the new system was in place, he needed to confirm the cameras and Control4 were communicating, particularly the six touchscreen panels throughout the home. The installer needed to make sure the field of view for each camera could be seen in every panel. The Control4 unit was connected directly to the IP cameras, and the cameras are on an external PoE switch. After making sure everything was properly connected, the cameras were sharing video information with Control4.

Solution

For outside security, the installer placed two Platinum IP PTZ High Speed Dome Cameras 2.1MP, PTZIP762X20IR, in the front and back of the home. The end user can control the PTZ through the Control4 Box and app. There is a 20x zoom on these cameras to keep watch on anyone approaching the area from the surrounding gate. Eleven Platinum Fixed Lens Dome Cameras 4.1MP— 2.8mm, CMIP3142W-28S, infiltrated the hallways and outdoor walkways to deter break-ins through windows and doors. The camera is low-profile with a built in microphone, and is perfect for indoor installation add on. The installer used eight Platinum Fixed Lens Bullet Cameras 4.1MP–4mm, CMIP9142W, four were set on wider field of view of all the home’s entry points, and four along the gate targeting the yards. One Platinum Motorized Varifocal Bullet IP Camera 4.1MP, CMIP9743W-SZ, captured approaching visitors at the front gate. Introduction

Currently ranked as one of the top ten franchise stores, 7-Eleven is not only known nationally, but has stores across the globe with more than 50,000 locations. Thousands of people purchase from 7-Eleven stores in New York daily. To protect customers and merchandise, deter shoplifting and stop employees from sweethearting, a higher definition security solution was necessary to continue best business practices. Store owners for 12 locations wanted to upgrade their existing NCR7402 PC based system to the new IP solutions system, consisting of POS with RS232 ports and converter box so the system can effectively communicate.

Challenge

After the installation, communication within the POS system failed, no messages appeared in an overlay format. The installer had to unplug and reconnect the cable in order to access the data. The installer created his own straight through cable, one type being cross over and converted the router.

Solution

A total of 16 cameras were placed in and around each of the stores. The installer placed the Platinum Fixed Lens Dome Network IP Camera 4.1MP-2.8mm, CMIP7442-28M, at the back of store to watch customer’s safety and prevent shoplifting. Since the store is open at night, the Platinum Fixed Lens Turret Network IP Camera 4.1MP-2.8mm, CMIP1142W-28, was used outside because of the Matrix IR technology. The technology gets rid of any halo effects and gives clear images in the dark. For the same reason, the installer also used Platinum Fixed Lens Turret Network IP Camera 4.1MP-2.8mm, CMIP3042-28, to keep watch over those entering and leaving the store. The Platinum Fixed Lens Dome Network IP Camera 4.1MP-2.8mm, CMIP3142W-28S, to watch the cash register and record all transactions. How Downtown Houston, Texas, Saved Big on IP Wireless Solution

Introduction

Downtown Houston, Texas began its renewal in the mid-1990’s and has developed over $6.1 billion in high rises, parks, and infrastructures. With robust activities and a strong economy, the growing population demands for more city surveillance security to continue growth and become a global city. Main Street runs through the heart of Downtown Houston that covers over 20 blocks. Surveillance was needed to help ensure the safety of the public for 5 blocks and intersections.

Challenge

Main Street was challenged with wiring limitations and obstructions that merely did not allow network Cat5/6. Old and new high rises and infrastructures would make wiring difficult from obstacles as some building materials or existing infrastructures was not practical to run. Due to the overall high cost and longer installation time of network Cat5/6, the city decide that wireless was their best route for the project.

Solution

Since high cost network Cat5/6 was out of the picture, the installer worked closely with LTS technician to draft a proposal using LTS IP products with a wireless solution, Ubiquiti nano stations. With numerous communication towers, and intersection poles, these areas made ideal locations to mount the nano stations in order for the solution to work.

The solution used 5 Smart Tracking IP PTZ, PTZIP762X20IR, 5 Ubiquiti wireless nano stations, and 20 Platinum Varifocal Vandal proof Dome cameras 3.2MP, CMIP7233-S, 4 6TB Western Digital Surveillance Grade hard drives, and the Enterprise Level 64 Channel NVR, LTN0764-R8. Each intersection of the 5 blocks used 1 PTZ, and 5 IP dome cameras. The Ubiquiti wireless nano station is capable of transmitting signal distances up to 1000ft, so having them mounted at the intersection poles was ideal. The PTZ used a wall mount at the corner of the most prominent building of an intersection. The 5 IP dome cameras were mounted along the vertical walls of buildings and with the camera’s 3-Axis function, they were easily adjustable to rotate lens to view the streets in the right direction.

The solution was connected to the Enterprise level 64 Channel NVR, LTN0764-R8. A 64 Channel option was selected for plans of further expansion since Main Street has over 20 blocks in Downtown Houston area.

Results

The wireless implementation and maintenance helped drive down cost for the city when no accessible network Cat5/6 points were available. The city avoided spending additional high cost expenses or building additional structures. The wireless solution is very flexible from point to point, or point to multi point, and was easily mounted on existing intersection poles. With the ease of installation and lower costs, the city was very satisfied with the wireless solution and plan on expanding the solution in the future.

McAllan Sheriff Department Captures More Forensic Details and Data with LTS IP Solution

Introduction

Visual and audio recording can be used as crucial evidence when displayed in a courtroom. In order to have access to this, functional and practical surveillance equipment must be installed for optimal results. McAllan Sheriff Department, located in Texas, needed to look for a system to cover 4 interrogation rooms with security cameras. All four of the rooms required video and audio recording with a low profile installation. The department had experience static or unclear audio in the past, so finding a camera with the ability to capture better audio was also a concern since the recordings may likely be used as forensic evidence in the courtroom.

Challenge

The four rooms were not adjacent and spread throughout the hall, making running additional wires like audio unattractive. Since they’re interrogation rooms, being able to keep everything low profile to avoid tension or even to help minimize vandalism, the cameras needed to be small. The ceilings are not extremely high, so the department did not want the cameras to be bulky or outstanding.

Solution

Analog or even HD-TVI systems may cause running wires difficult with the small areas available. Therefore, an IP system provided the best solution for this sheriff department. The project required 4x 3.2MP Platinum Fixed Lens Dome Cameras, CMIP3132-28S with a Platinum Professional Level 4 Channel NVR, LTN8704-P4 and a pre-installed Western Digital surveillance grade 4TB hard drive storage. The cameras were placed in conspicuous locations of the room, in order to avoid attention from any individuals being interrogated. The CMIP3132-28S turned out to be an ideal camera because of its small size, low profile housing, and built in audio so no additional cables had to be run. Only a Cat5 was run back to the NVR.

Results

In the end, the sheriff department was able to capture higher quality video clips on any interrogation taking place with audio. The strong details such as a suspects facial expression, was clear thanks to the IP cameras used in the project and was able to be used as viable evidence. They were impressed with the quality of the audio and the cost they have saved from having to purchase as well as how fast it was to get the system running. As a bonus comment, they were very happy that they’re able to watermark the video so it is not fabricated, and can be considered authentic video data in the courtrooms.

Coastal Island Gas Stations Uses LTS IP Wireless Solution

Introduction

Galveston Island is located within the metropolitan area of The Woodlands, Sugar Land. It’s a popular tourist spot as well as ideal for beach city life style residents. Since it’s a coastal city, drastic climate changes is a concern for outdoor surveillance installations. The gas stations are popular targets for vandalism and robbery with the heavy population and seasonal tourists. This project was to help ensure a reliable, and quality installation for 8 gas stations on the island. The project included coverage of each pump with up to 8 pumps at each station. Each of the canopies needed over 5 cameras in order to cover each gas pump.

Challenge

Due to drastic climate changes in the coastal city, and detached stores at each station, we wanted to make sure that the NVR was stored in the manager’s office in the store with the ability to monitor all the cameras placed in the canopy. It would be difficult to run wires under the concrete up to the canopy, and also take tremendous amount of time to build pillars to the wires so they can run up to the canopy and back to the detached store and manager’s office. After careful plots and planning, the decision to be made for this task needed to be taken. Galveston beach always consists of bad weather, and the manager’s office is remote which means cameras cannot be wired through the canopy. It was difficult to run cables to the manager’s office in a separate building, when he only wanted to have one VMS.

Solution

Therefore after careful planning, LTS technicians worked closely with the installer to come up with a wireless solution. This solution consist of a total of 45 IP Platinum Fixed Lens Turret Cameras 3.2MP, CMIP3032-28, with 1 Platinum Enterprise Level 16 Channel NVR 1.5U, LTN8816, used at each of the 8 locations. A pair of Ubiquiti wireless nano station bridge was used to help connect the IP cameras to the NVR without having to run wires. These have the capability of transmitting signal distances up to 1000ft. The transmitter was on top of the manager’s building and the receiver unit was installed on top of the canopy. These were easily installable with the built-in attached pole mounts on the back.

Results

In the end, the customer avoided spending additional expenses and labor on burying cables underneath the ground, or adding additional structures. LTS was able to provide a simplified solution, while still being reliable and proved to be cost effective. Most gas stations operates 24/7, so managers were definitely more at ease to know their station was being monitored and recorded at all times. Shortly after installation, one of the 8 location was able to capture minor vandalism which was later reported to the police.

The health care organization was very satisfied with the quality of the cameras and was pleased with the support provided by LTS. They are able to easily train each location on how to use the software and found it an overall job well done. Since the safety and security is a huge priority, and with the standard sizes of the professional level NVRs, they were also able to lock the NVR’s securely into their network room on the storage rack. A job well done.

Baptist Temple Switches from Honeywell to LTS IP and HD-TVI Solution

Introduction

The Baptist Temple helps their local community with numerous events, and encourage those to walk with Christ. The Church had a previous 32-Channel Honeywell Fusion Hybrid analog system that burned out from a horrible storm and lightening. The Baptist Temple went 2 years without a system because of the cost that they thought would be involved. The dealer presented an affordable quote that was so much lower than the previous system they approved it right away. Their current analog system was replaced with a new LTS 32-Channel HD-TVI and 8-Channel IP system without having to run new cabling. 8 2MP PTZ High Speed Domes and 24 HD-TVI Vandal Proof cameras were used in the system. The Church was so please they later asked if they could add cameras, and with the scalability of the systems, two 2MP IP cameras were added, with room for more. They were amazed with how easy the system was to use and how good that it looked.

Challenge

The customer wanted an all-in-one system that had better quality and not IP. IP would have been difficult with because of the cost of rewiring and distances of the large Church. The most cost effective way to solve their problem was to go with a HD-TVI system because we would not have to replace cabling and the system was relatively inexpensive compared to what they were expecting. We were able to just swap out cameras but with much higher quality. Satisfied customer!

Solution

We used the Platinum Enterprise Level 32 Channel HD-TVI DVR 1.5U, LTD8432T-FA, 8 Platinum HD-TVI PTZ High Speed Dome Cameras 2MP, PTZH772X30IR, 24 Platinum HD-TVI Vandal Proof Dome Camera, CMHD3423DW, and when they wanted to add more, we was easily able to add 2 Platinum IP Fixed Lens Dome Camera 2MP, CMIP7422-28M, on to the same Tribrid technology DVR! The customer was very surprised the system allow us to use 2 more IP cameras on top of using cables for the HD-TVI.

Results

With the help of our sales rep and tech support, we were able to give the customer more than they were expecting and ended up with an extremely pleased customer. LTS definitely proves to have competitive price and warranty. Their technicians are also on top of the game in a helping hand when needed. Thanks LTS!

LTS Giving Back to the River Oaks, Texas Community

Introduction

LTS’ goal is to provide security solutions for any situation. However we realize that sometimes surveillance systems can be expensive. We recognized that need over at River Oaks Patrol and wanted help. River Oaks Patrol is a private not-for-profit security patrol service located in Houston, TX since 1925.

Results

LTS was able to provide them with a 4 Channel NVR and 4 Dome 3MP cameras. In addition to the surveillance system we also provided them with wiring and installation which was completed by Western Systems Inc.

River Oaks Patrol was very appreciative of LTS’s NVR surveillance system. Operations Manager Mark McMahon said, “I wish I could emphasize how valuable this donated equipment will be for our neighborhood as a demonstration tool and I cannot express enough [of] my appreciation for [LTS].”

Mark has indicated that that the equipment will be used to train his investigative team so they can effectively pull data from other systems in the Houston area. River Oaks Patrol, to date, has been successful in gathering data on burglary suspects which they then share on with local law enforcement officials.

Mark and his team have also been able to educate the community on the benefits of surveillance systems, which they reported an “impressive response from the community.” Surveillance systems are becoming more common in neighborhoods as they help reduce crime and lead to arrests. LTS was proud to help River Oaks Patrol from Houston and look forwarding to helping other organizations in the future.

The Chicago Elevator

Introduction

Chicago is a city known for its unique skyline.  Its skyscrapers are a historic treasure of the city.  The cityscape has structures more than a century old.  While many have been renovated, some still lack certain modern conveniences and utilities.

Installing a camera in the elevator of a tall, Chicago building is an unusual case.  The typical camera installation, in a nutshell, is running wires from power to cameras to a DVR.  For an elevator, running wires is no simple task.

Challenge

When an elevator is constructed, it includes lines for power and often an intercom.  Modern elevators may have cables for cameras and other utilities.  The existing elevator in this particular building did not have those features.  Adding cables post-construction requires reengineering and retrofitting.  The costs, time, and complexity involved are considerable.  It may even require a renovation.

A better solution was needed for our Chicago customer.  How can a camera be installed in an elevator within a reasonable budget and deadline?  Is there an alternative to wires and renovation?

Solution

A wireless AP (Access Point) module, such as LT-APNSM5, is a pair of devices that can network two points together without a physical cable.  They are similar to Wi-Fi, but more powerful and designed to link wired network devices.  They can carry the video feed of IP cameras, such as CMIP9723-S

A wireless AP and an IP camera will provide excellent picture quality.  They are also a fraction of the cost and time of installing physical wires.  This seemed like a perfect answer for the elevator problem.  The first point of the wireless bridge was installed at the top of the elevator shaft, the second on top of the elevator.  An Ethernet cable was run from there to the camera inside.

Results

The LT-APNSM5 wireless AP worked excellently.  Sending the signal through the elevator shaft, while atypical, worked without issue.  The end result was a crystal clear picture, even while the elevator was in motion.

White Pine Country

Summary

Even if you never heard of White Pine County, Nevada, the name evokes a peaceful sense and brings picturesque landscapes to mind.  Named for its lush and plentiful pine trees, it is home to nature reserves and several historical sites.  Sadly, there is crime even here.

In February of 2013, there was burglary in this area where the surveillance system, an LTD2316ME, was damaged.  This was in an obvious attempt to prevent law enforcement from finding the culprits.  Fortunately, the hard disk drive seemed intact.  A detective from White Pine County Sheriff's Office contacted LTS seeking information on how to retrieve data from the salvaged drive.

Challenge

In a situation like this, it can be hard to retrieve data from the hard drive.  The drive could have significant internal damage despite minor external damage. Files could have been corrupted when the device was improperly shutdown.  The LTD2316ME came out two years ago and has 16 channels; heavy use could have left the drive in poor condition.  The DVR is basically a simple computer running Linux; compatibility issues are unlikely but possible.  User error and mean time between failures are factors too.

Solution

Normally, DVR backups can be quickly and easily retrieved.  The controls are directly on the Main Menu.  A common USB flash drive can store the files.  This is obviously not an option if the DVR is not operational.

The first option we presented to the Sheriff's Office was to install the hard disk drive in a normal computer.  There is no operating system on a standalone DVR’s drive; every byte of space is used for video storage.  It needs to be connected as a secondary drive.  If this option worked, the DAT files on the drive could be copied and played easily.  We included the software to play the files in the initial e-mail (normally included when making a backup from the DVR).

If this failed, there were other options.  The next one would be to try reading the drive in Linux.  If the problem was compatibility with Windows, then this would solve it.  Retrieving the files using another LTD2316ME seems like a simple solution, but it carries a hidden risk.  By default, the DVR will recycle hard drive space by deleting old files.  The DVR can be configured not to record at all, but there is a chance of user error.

Results

The first method, connecting the drive to a computer, worked without issue.  Despite damage to the DVR, the drive was in good condition and the DAT files were uncorrupted.  The files were easily played and the incident was indeed recorded by the DVR.

In the end, the White Pine County Sheriff's Office was “able to view the files and identify both subjects involved with the burglary, which led to their arrest.”

LTS is happy to have been able to provide assistance to the White Pine County Sheriff's Office.  We are proud that our product was instrumental in bringing two criminals to justice.

New York Neighbors

Introduction

Staten Island, part of New York City, is primarily an urban area. Most areas are developed and structures are fairly close together. Sometimes neighboring buildings are owned by the same person. This was the case for a New York customer. Each building needed a pair of outside cameras; however, an obstacle was between them: a narrow road.

Challenge

Laying cable is an ideal way to connect two locations. The upfront cost is high, but it creates the most reliable connection. Unfortunately the small, paved road turns laying cable into minor construction work, raising costs significantly.

The Internet can create a virtual connection. This typically requires no physical installation and the upfront is low. The problem is that long-term broadband costs are thousands of dollars and the reliability is reduced.

An economical and reliable alternative was needed.

Solution

Fortunately, LTS has a tool designed for cases such as this: a wireless AP (Access Point) module, such as LT-APNSM5. It is actually a pair of devices. They use radio waves to communicate and act like a single, long wire. It is a network device, so it pairs well with IP cameras. Designed for outdoor use, it can withstand, and operate in, harsh weather.

CMIP3923-Z IP cameras were placed at two key vantage points on each building. Two were connected directly to the two were connected via the wireless AP. Networking cable was used for all physical connections.

Results

The wireless AP module successfully linked the two buildings. The video from the four cameras are indistinguishable from each other. The picture for the directly connected cameras and the wirelessly linked cameras are of the same excellent quality.

Boca Grande View

Introduction

Boca Grande, Florida is a small town on a beautiful island. Light blue ocean and sugar sand beaches surround the isle. This picturesque view draws in visitors and tourists. What if you wanted to share that view with the world, live, in order to attract more people?

Challenge

The internet is a great medium for sharing information, including cameras feeds. Analog and HD-SDI cameras cannot directly communicate with a network; they would need a converter or adaptor. An IP camera is a more appropriate solution.

Most IP cameras, LTS Platinum and included, have a web client interface. They require a username and password to use; remote access can be granted via port forwarding. This solution is not scalable due to limited simultaneous logins. Furthermore, the camera streams and local upload speeds have limits.

Solution

Our Platinum series of IP cameras, such as supports a feature called Real Time Streaming Protocol). This is an open video streaming standard designed for interoperability. Alone, the IP camera can only support a few RTSP connections, but with a reflector streaming service the bandwidth limitations can be overcome. The reflector service in this case, takes one stream from the camera and copies it. Pricing is in tiers depending on the bandwidth needs of the customers. The service is fully compatible with any Platinum Series IP camera because they support RTSP.

Results

The cameras are installed and linked to the Internet. The solution has been realized: two LTS Platinum Series IP cameras are visible to the world. At the time of writing, the customer is negotiating the reflector streaming account details. In the interim, HDRelay has made low quality demo links available (HD/720P is possible). When an update is available it will be reflected in this article.

Note: 0.3 megapixel demonstration camera feeds.
